Getting to Know Cosplay Types in Japanese Culture

Cosplay is originally a fashion trend inspired by anime or manga characters. It was first introduced in Japan (1978) when celebrating a science fiction convention.

In terms, cosplay means playing with clothes to resemble certain characters in anime or manga. Fernando Kusuma, in his book 'Japan in Popular Culture' said that the cosplay trend was very loved by the Indonesian people.

But, he also differentiate it into several types which will be explained more clearly here. Check it out!

TYPES OF COSPLAY

It was not just based on anime or manga, because Japanese cosplay consists of several other types. Summarized from the thesis entitled 'Perkembangan Budaya Cosplay Jepang di Kalangan Komunitas Cosplay Jakarta (2018)', these are the types of cosplay:

1. Game Cosplay

As the name implies, this type of cosplay is inspired by character from any favorite games. Generally in the form of Mecha form, Fantasy theme, Warriors build, and many others.

The challenge in this cosplay is to make accessories that are similar to the original characters. In addition, the use of detailed make-up is also needed to make the cosplay look like the intended game character who also favored by many gamers.

2. Tokusatsu Cosplay

Tokusatsu is an abbreviation of 'tokushu satsuei' which in Japanese language means special photography or effects. In Indonesian, this is called the special effects cosplay.

The term tokusatsu is used to refer to film productions that use special effects in Japan. Examples such as Kamen Rider, Gavan, Godzilla, and many more.

The distinguishing feature of this type of cosplay is that the cosplayers do not show their faces. They usually wear masks like tokusatsu characters in general.

3. Gothic Cosplay

The hallmark of gothic cosplay is the shades of dark and black clothes used by cosplayers. This impression makes them look more mysterious and sinister. Not always black, sometimes gothic cosplay is combined with other colors such as white and gray.

Usually this type of cosplay plays characters such as vampires, angels of death, and so on. Some cosplayers are also combine it with Lollita fashion.

4. Original Cosplay

Original cosplay relies on the cosplayer's thoughts which are being visualized into a costume. Their inspiration did not come from the fictional world such as manga, anime, tokusatsu, and so on.

It's all about originality and creativity. Some cosplayers often combine it with the harajuku style.

5. Random Cosplay

Random or freestyle cosplay does not have certain rules in the clothes. Cosplayers are free to be anyone, and they do not have to rely on anime or manga characters. For example, being the character Elsa in the movie Frozen.
